CHAPTER 5

I’d already been missing for two days, but I wasn’t in any rush to get home. The bus dropped me off just as the sun was setting and I decided to walk around for a bit before I went back to see what my father would have to say about my disappearing act.

I ended up in the park. I wasn’t sure how I’d got there. I hadn’t been thinking about the park. I’d been thinking about everything that had been said between Poppy and me. I was wondering how I was going to tell Danny. He’d been so certain that she would help. He’d been so certain about her goodness that he hadn’t even considered that my plan might fail.

I stopped when I heard a rustling in the trees. The sound of heavy breathing followed and I froze. Was somebody being attacked? Was somebody being hurt just yards away from me? I forced myself forward, so I could make sure that everything was okay. I stopped when I saw the long shadows of two people together.

My eyes glanced from the shadows to the people they belonged to, and froze. It was Sam and some guy from the football team. They were naked. The other guy was bent over, holding himself up against a tree, and Sam was standing behind him. They were having sex.

I pulled out my phone and took four shots, bang bang bang bang, without even thinking, while Sam went bang bang bang bang and the other guy took it. Then I quickly walked away, so they wouldn’t know that I’d been there.

I could feel my head spinning. What had I just seen? Had I really just seen what I thought I had? What did it mean? Was Sam gay?

The other guy had looked as though he was having a good time. It didn’t look like Sam was forcing himself on him. So he was gay. He had to be.

But then, why? Why did he do what he did to me? Why did he do what he did to Poppy?

I had too many unanswered questions. I had too many unresolved problems. It was too much. I couldn’t focus on any of them. I made my way back home. I knew that my night was long from being over and that I had to face the storm before it found me.

The light on the porch was on. I pushed the door open quietly and considered trying to sneak up to my room, but my dad had been listening out for me. “Get yourself into the kitchen now,” I heard his voice boom.

I walked through the darkened hallway and pushed open the door to the kitchen. “So, you’re talking to me again?” I asked, as I walked into the room.

“Sit down,” he glared. “Where have you been?”

“I went to go see a friend.”

“You thought it would be okay to leave for two days without telling me where you were going?”

“Well, you weren’t talking to me, so what was I supposed to do?” I asked him with shrug.
